TV Weekly April 13 – 19

1. Invincible Season 4 Episode 7

96/100
– Prime Video – Next Ep. April 22 – 4 AM*

Since Episode 2’s seemingly weak outing, Invincible Season 4 has absolutely been one of the best seasons of television ever made, with Episode 7 being one of its best, as we see the Coalition head to Viltrum to attack Thragg head-on and end the war. This plan does not go as expected, as Thragg is way stronger than anticipated, decimating Oliver, Nolan, Thaedus, and Mark, and ending the episode on one of the darkest notes in the series, but one of the most enthralling and jaw-dropping at the same time. With action sequences, monologues, the destruction of Viltrum, and the impending threat of Thragg heading to Earth, the show has never had this high of stakes and this intense and complex a battle, with one episode left, seemingly more of an epilogue and fall back, this season has been one of so much conversation, and so much excitement with monumental ratings that may never be replicated by an animated show again unless its the next season of Invincible.

2. The Pitt Season 2 Ep. 15

90/100
– HBO MAX – Season Complete

Season 2 of The Pitt finished with an emotional end to the long shift, as all the day shift workers have their day come to an end, some more stressful than others, as well as Al-Hashimi and Robbie having a tough but real conversation about her health. It’s a season about Robbie, clearly, but more importantly its a season that does an excellent job commenting on what the trauma of life as an ER doctor can bring outside work and vice versa. Its an outstanding season of television that finishes with yet another outstanding episode, ending with the workers watching the 4th of July fireworks from the roof in a sad, but ceremonial scene that does spectacularly, sitting near the top of our ratings yet again.

3. Beef Season 2

88.4/100
– Netlfix – Season Complete

We have released a full review on Season 2 of Beef that goes into much more detail than we will here, but Season 2 took a huge swing with an anthology-type series, building off one of the most successful limited series of all time. For us at the TwilightRoom, it was a huge hit, this season is so intricate, delicate with its commentary and off-the-walls when it needs to be and it is a must check-out. Unfortunately there has been some discourse about fans not viewing or prematurely speaking poorly about the season due to the new cast and not a returning one, and we implore you to give the season a chance as it delivers the same concepts in a completely different atmosphere, so parallel, and well.

4. The Boys Season 5 Ep. 3

88/100
– Prime Video – Next Ep. April 22 – 3 AM*

Homelander has always been the biggest catch of The Boys, with an outstanding performance consistently by Anthony Starr, and it’s no different in this episode, after his son Ryan confronts him alone. However, the show doesn’t run without Billy Butcher and the show’s commitment to making him an unredeemable piece of the puzzle that walks the line of less bad and bad, put on display with his wildly difficult and less- fatherly conversation with Ryan, in the episode surrounding the killing of Homelander, it’s brilliant. Episode 3 was more of a transition episode as the characters are moving closer to a convergence point in a desperate attempt to stop Homelander from becoming an immortal supe. But even one of The Boys’ calmer episodes is a wild ride and this one is exactly that, another great entry into The Boys Season 5.

5. Daredevil Born Again Season 2 Ep. 5

87/100
– Disney + – Next Ep. April 21 – 9:00 PM*

In one of the show’s most reflective, homage-driven episodes so far, Daredevil Born Again Episode 5, provides a dual story format that shows Fisk as he spends the final moments with his wife as she dies, reminiscing on their love, and showing more of the humanity in the horrible man, that has seemed to lose all reason otherwise. Mixed with Daredevil having to deal with the emotion that still clearly lingers with the loss of his best friend Foggie, as he must decide whether he is going to leave Bullseye to die, or save his life, the man who killed Foggie. It’s not an episode that centers on brutal fight scenes, but instead on what the newer series has often avoided: the emotional complexity of a seriesr-long battle in Hell’s Kitchen, for what’s right. Matt Murdock is such a complex, moral character and here we see him make the moral decision over the human decision, in what has become representative of his character the last few seasons. Episode 5 is not the best episode of the series but it is certainly up there for a far different reason than others, setting up for a remainder of Season 2 that simply can’t disappoint.

6. Rooster Ep. 7

86/100
– HBO MAX – Next Ep. April 26 – 10:00 PM*

As stated last week, Rooster has found its niche and has become an incredibly endearing and funny watch that its audiences look forward to every Sunday night, and Episode 7 may be its best episode yet. Greg deals with the fallout of his favorite student being the child of his affair, as we see Kate start to believe in Archie’s efforts to rekindle, as Archie is stuck between supporting his affair’s child and his wife that is on the line of becoming his ex-wife. Dylan is growing increasingly better as a character with every episode, and Greg’s writing is becoming more and more refined, to just being absolutely hilarious at this point, aging better each week as we, the audience start to become familiar with this new Carrell character. Rooster is finishing off its debut season on a fantastic note and we at the TwilightRoom can’t get enough of it.

7. Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord Ep. 3 & 4

85.0/100
– Disney + – Next Ep. April 20 – 12:00 AM*

After a huge hit for the fans in Maul – Shadow Lord’s premiere last week, the show returned for two new episodes, that in our opinion are a step-up from more of an introduction release last week. We see Maul setting up revenge, and a commitment to becoming the top of the Crime world in Coruscant, working with a new Jedi Devon to try and make her his apprentice. In Episodes’ 3 & 4 audiences get the same amount of action and battle scenes with the addition of more in-depth character development for both the police chief voiced by Wagner Moura, and the jedi who has been training Devon, along with Maul, and his positioning in the world. With only three more weeks of episodes, the only thing holding this show back from being one of Star War’s best is its far too short runtime with one of the IPs most popular and complex characters.

8. Hacks Season 5 Ep. 2

85/100
– HBO MAX – Next Ep. April 23 – 9 PM*

Hacks Season 5 is off to yet another amazing and witty start, as Deborah tries to stay true to her promise of performing a show at Madison Square Garden, she goes to a convention to meet fans for the first time in years to earn support and traction to get the gig. She soon figures out that her effort into her fans is where her success lies, in an episode that does a great job writing parasocial comddy, as well as celebrating Eva’s birthday, in a typical well-crafted 40-minute episode. Hacks like Abbott Elementary is a cleverly crafted, consistent show that always delivers, and Episode 2 is a perfect example of why that is, brilliant writing, and a great two main characters.

9. One Piece Ep. 1158

85/100
– Crunchyroll – Next Ep. April 24 – 7 AM*

As the main crew of the Straw Hats start to learn more about the strange land they find themselves stuck in, Luffy starts to wreak havoc, shattering mirrors and enraging the so‑called sun god of the villagers, adding another lukewarm episode, with fantastic animation, to the beginning of this arc that soon will become one of the most important of the entire adventure. It’s the calm before the storm here, but it’s still high quality, and all the original Straw Hats, having a moment of fun together before all-out chaos, earns a high rating from us here, and seemingly from a lot of fans that have not been complaining with the new episode releases.

10. Survivor Season 50 Ep. 8

85/100
– Hulu/Paramount+ – Next Ep. April 22 – 8 PM*

Another episode of Survivor Season 50 with a twist that is one of the biggest and most controversial in the show’s history, as the contestants pair up and are eliminated as a duo at Tribal Council for the first time ever. Maybe parts of this episode would have been rated lower if it weren’t for the boot being two contestants that most of the fanbase was excited to see leave, with some theatrics from Devens at Tribal and another dominant, emerging season from Cirie. A returning season that has become the center of the Survivor landscape, and the biggest and most talked about season in years continues to walk the line of good and too much, having us wait for every episode  weekly to see which it is.

11. Witch Hat Atelier Ep. 3

84/100
– Crunchyroll – Next Ep. April 20 – 7 AM*

Episodes 1 & 2 of Witch Hat Atelier were a slow start, for a show that was praised even before its release for its animation style and artistic magic system, and was looking to end up dull. Episode 3 blows that concept out of the water as we see Coco take on the Dadah Range test at the most dangerous time of the year to become a true witch, with gorgeous scenes and a magic system that sees her fly through the sunsetting sky, the beauty of the episode matched the depth of the dynamics Qifrey seems to be preparing the series for. Episode 3 is an outstanding update to the first season of the anticipated show, and as an audience, we’re left to see whether the show can sustain this momentum or if this will stand as a single early promise of success.

12. Wistoria Wand & Sword Season 2 Ep. 2

84/100
– Crunchyroll – Next Ep. April 26 – 12:30 AM*

After a fantastic first episode of Wistoria Season 2, ending in the first major threat in the show’s narrative, Episode 2 returns for another really solid episode that turns up the emotions to the max, as Will begins to experience his first loss as a magic user, it’s a pay off that really has weight to it as the antagonist, is being built up by focusing on connection among its characters in season 1. Great animation, emotional weight, and a season that seems to have some stakes, Season 2 looks to be a big step towards the top tier of new generation anime that we will be intriguiged to follow and see how the show can continue this success for the rest of the season.

13. Abbott Elementary Season 5 Ep. 20

83/100
– Hulu – Next Ep. April 2 – 8:30 PM*

The breakup of Janine and Gregory continues to sit at the forefront of Abbott Elementary’s season 5, as the two go out and party to try and numb the sadness left behind, but the episode’s plot itself is far from the show’s strongest. However, Jacob in this episode is exceptionally funny and the dunking scene in the last few minutes is absolutely one of the best skits the show has ever done, boosting this episode up a slight bit from a lower rating than normal for the show. As the show approaches the end of the season, a solution is imminent, and perhaps a step back up in storyline quality.

14. Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Ep.3

80/100
– Apple TV+ – Next Ep. April 23 – 8:00 PM*

After Coop is caught for stealing from the new cast addition Owen Ashe, he is placed in a precarious position causing much higher paranoia surrounding his illegal operation as he scrambles to backtrack and recover the stolen item in order to preserve his status as an undetected thief. The quality of this show is settling in as an extremely solid show that is here to stay with 3 episodes that do a great job of continuing the solid start from season one, but Episode 3 certainly feels like an show that is transitioning from where the characters start off and where the plot is leading. We are looking for an extreme plot development or clear throughline to be presented in Episode 4, to bolster a lot of the story development seen in this season, it’s an episode that will be elevated upon the release of the rest of the season or looked back on poorly, if the season veers in the wrong direction.

15. Monarch Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Ep. 8

79/100
– Apple TV+ – Next Ep. April 22 – 10 PM*

Finally, in a show marketed to have monsters left and right, using Titan X as the central plot point in all the promotion, we get to see some action that we have been looking for here, and unsurprisingly, it’s one of the better episodes of the season so far. We see the cast finally converge in the same place as they set up for a Godzilla and Titan x fight that is certainly what we at the TwilightRoom want, but with this rating, it’s clear the opinion here is that the show is too little, too late, its clunky and overly slow-paced season unable to rise above the merely solid big-budget visuals and the occasional interesting emotional scene.

16. Euphoria Season 3 Ep. 2

78/100
– HBO MAX – Next Ep. April 26 – 9:00 PM*

Sam Levinson never has been scared of being very explicit in his shows and Euphoria has always had discourse and erotic moments, but many of the scenes he tosses into Episode 2 here simply just felt unnecessary and come off more like creepy direction than any sense of brilliance. The positives here are Rue’s story is constantly staying great as Zendaya is fantastic, Maddie being a second character that brings real intrigue to a heavily changed season, and Jules returning to the story after being a no-show in Episode 1. I just can’t get past some of the clearly unnecessary moments that feel out of place, driven more by a provocative‑for‑provocation’s‑sake impulse than anything meaningful; Levinson swings and misses but he thinks he hits a home run and that’s what really bugged me with some of these scenes. There is so much genuinely strong work here, so why can’t he just stick to it instead of tapping into ideas that really hinders his creation.

17. Imperfect Women Episode 6

78/100
– Apple TV+ – Next Ep. April 21 – 9 PM*

As the show transitions once again from one friend to the last friend of the trio in Marsha, Imperfect Women was very up-in-the-air as to whether this novel adaptation really deserved any attention and intrigue at a time when so many stories like this are releasing. Marsha’s story does a solid job at maintaining a bit of the mystery and complex relationships between all three women and their spouses, but does lose me a bit again, simply because Laura’s storyline is just far more interesting then the other two women. We see Marsha learn of her husband’s lies and infidelity and seek solace in multiple different friends and enemies, increasingly providing clues as to who killed her best friend and bringing up more personal statements surrounding the situation. At this point the show needs to begin to reveal its information or it’s going to go stale like the beginning of the season, and lose any traction it has picked up from its last 3 episodes.

18. Dr. Stone Season 4 Ep. 27

77/100
–Crunchyroll – Next Ep. April 23 – 6 AM*

Dr. Stone has always had its niche audience that absolutely loves it and I have never considered myself a part of it, but always slightly intrigued. Episode 27 returns to the show’s basic formula, a split, large ensemble with less action and more problem- solving, and while it’s cool in theory, it’s starting to feel stretched thin at this point. As we watch Xeno and Senku continue working on the rocket that will take them into space to uncover the truth behind Why‑Man, the season’s momentum stalls yet again. It’s a fun premise but just needs that spark of intrigue and emotion delivered more consistently to really build a higher-rated season.

19. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 4 Ep. 3

76/100
– Crunchyroll – Next Ep. April 24 – 7 AM*

Slime yet again returns with a season that has trouble managing the world it has built for itself here, with another episode including a lot of housekeeping within the city as Rimuru sets to alter the dungeons based on new challenges and troubles. However, the introduction of a new human reincarnated, Maribell Rosso episodes coming could possibly bring some action and a full plotline to the series that this season so desperately needs. With a US release of the new film for the IP there is no shortage of content for Slime, and lets all hope the story becomes more intricate and action-packed as more and more episodes and content is pumped out.
