TwilightRoom Adds Austin Film Festival to its Debut-Year Coverage, Bringing Film Fans Inside the Storytelling

Founder and critic Devin Esser heads to sixth major festival, expanding coverage of new releases, emerging talent and the creative choices behind the screen.

AUSTIN, Texas, October 26, 2026 / EINPresswire.com / — Independent film criticism platform TwilightRoom is expanding its Austin Film Festival coverage as founder, editor and critic Devin Esser prepares to report on-site from the festival’s 33rd edition, October 29–November 5. Following its public launch at SXSW in March, the publication will bring readers insightful reviews, viewing recommendations and insights into the writing behind this year’s films.

The engagement follows TwilightRoom’s coverage of SXSW, Tribeca, Fantasia, Fantastic Fest and AFI FEST. Across those festivals, Esser is developing the publication around a clear editorial purpose: helping audiences discover films worth their attention and engage more deeply with the stories they watch.

“A good review should give readers something they can use, whether that’s a reason to seek out a film or a new way to think about one they’ve already seen. We want TwilightRoom to become a place movie fans return to because the criticism adds something to their experience.”

— Devin Esser

Ahead of the festival, TwilightRoom has published “The 14 Most Anticipated Releases of Austin Film Festival.” What ties them together is the writing, since this is a festival where the screenplay is the headline rather than the footnote, and the strongest entries here are the ones whose scripts have been the first thing every reviewer reaches for. The preview includes the 14 screenings from this year’s lineup that are considered essential viewing.

Austin Film Festival offers a particularly fitting next stop. Known as “the writers festival,” its 33rd edition features 97 films from 24 countries, paired with a four-day Writers Conference featuring more than 200 panels, conversations, script readings and workshops. That emphasis gives TwilightRoom an opportunity to examine how a screenplay’s choices translate into performances, characters and moments audiences remember.

The festival opens with the Texas premiere of “The Debut,” written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg and starring Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey and Bernadette Peters. Tony Gilroy’s “Behemoth!,” featuring Pedro Pascal, Olivia Wilde and Eva Victor, is the centerpiece presentation. Other selections include Brad Bird’s animated neo-noir “Ray Gunn,” Peter Farrelly’s “I Play Rocky” and new work from filmmakers including James Gray, Pedro Almodóvar, Danny Boyle and Andrew Haigh.

Esser’s reporting will look beyond the most recognizable names to consider independent discoveries, emerging filmmakers and the storytelling choices that distinguish a film. For readers following the fall release calendar, the coverage will provide an early perspective on films entering the wider cultural and awards-season conversation.

“There’s a lot of attention on which films will win awards. We’re also interested in which films make you feel something, challenge your assumptions or take a creative risk. Austin puts the writers at the center of that conversation, which gives us another way to explore what makes those films work.”

— Devin Esser

The festival also creates connections with TwilightRoom’s year-round criticism. Its new “On the Road” retrospective series includes “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Paper Moon,” “The Straight Story” and “Poetic Justice.” The screening of “Poetic Justice” connects with TwilightRoom’s Criterion Tuesday exploration of John Singleton’s Hood Trilogy, linking its festival reporting with its examination of influential cinema.

TwilightRoom’s Austin coverage will appear through its website, free newsletter and social media channels. Alongside festival reporting, the publication offers film and television reviews, recurring rankings, curated recommendations and analysis for readers seeking a closer look at what they watch.
