July 27 – August 2

TwilightRoom’s TV Weekly Recap for July 27-August 2, 2026, covers the latest episodes from everyone’s favorite shows over the past seven days, making sure you’re fully caught up and ready to hit play on everything worth watching in the week ahead.

1. House of the Dragon Season 3 Ep. 7

91/100
– HBO Max – Next Ep. August 9 9:00 PM
Poster for the House of the Dragon HBO series, a standout among October 2026 movies and TV, showing the cast around the Iron Throne with the text Win or Die and New Season June 21.

It would be hard to find a more intense dragon battle than the one where Sheepstealer, the new fan favorite of season 3, must defend itself against three of the strongest dragons in the kingdom, only for the chaos to be topped by Sunfyre’s unbelievable return, one of the craziest moments in the show’s history. Rhaenyra learning that Daemon lied about her son’s killer is powerful, and not the first, but perhaps one of the strongest signs that the queen is becoming worn down and inching closer to a dark future. House of the Dragon Season 3 is outstanding and with only one more episode left in the season it will soon solidify itself as one of the best series of the year, so far, what place it falls comes down to if it can stick the landing in its big finale next week.

2. One Piece Ep. 1172

89/100
– Crunchyroll – August 9 7:15 AM
A small cartoon character in a horned helmet and red cape walks across a snowy TV Weekly expanse above the One Piece logo.

One Piece continues its pursuit of an all-out war involving the Holy Knights, the Straw Hats, and the giants, and, of course, the arc’s main new character, Loki. It remains unrelenting in its fantastic animation and story building. The pace has slowed considerably, and audience criticism about the pacing is running rampant right now, but we will always defend this fantastic show for the rest of its release. The action shots of Loki using his hammer for the first time carry the series to the top of our list once again.

3. Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2

86.6/100
– Prime Video – Season Complete
Batman crouches in the rain in a promotional poster for Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2, which premieres July 29 on Prime Video.

We just posted a full review for Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2, which you can check out below. This is perhaps the best step up from a Season 1 to a Season 2 we’ve seen: the creativity here in paying homage to the original Batman: The Animated Series, mixed with fun new comic adaptations and faithful yet contemporary renditions of the old Rogues Gallery, is fantastic. It’s a 5-star show, full stop. If you haven’t tapped into this underrated new animated superhero show, you are missing out, you absolutely must give it a watch, as it sits very high on our weekly rankings.

4. X-Men '97 Season 2 Ep. 7

86/100
– Disney+– Next Ep. August 5 – 3:00 AM*
Promotional poster for Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97 Season Two featuring Wolverine with his claws out, premiering July 1 on Disney+ as part of the Tribeca Film Festival 2026 Experience.

X-Men ’97 is moving toward a solution for defeating Apocalypse, and with the X-Men back in the ’90s and Xavier providing the lost mutants with a safe haven, the answer comes through Polaris and her connection to her father, which gives the team the power they need. X-Men ’97 has settled into being one of the best shows of the year and a standout continuation of both the original series and the first season, but it still needs a big finish from its last few episodes to truly separate itself in a crowded field of returning shows.

5. Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness Ep. 6

85/100
– HBO Max – Next Ep. August 7 – 9:00 PM*
TV Weekly poster for the HBO limited series Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, featuring a man dressed as George Washington holding an axe next to a chopped cherry tree.

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness has been consistently great, sitting at an average 84/100 rating, but episode 6 delivers that same consistency even better as the funniest episode of the show so far, with great cameos and the most creative skits. Paul Rudd and Larry David as Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were primetime comedy and certainly one of the best skits either performer has ever done, further proving just how solid and underrated this HBO Max comedy has become as it moves into its finale next week. If you have yet to check this show out, take this as your sign,  it sits high on our rankings yet again.

6. Silo Season 3 Ep. 5

84/100
– Apple TV+ – Next Ep. August 6– 9:00 PM*
Promotional poster for the October 2026 TV series Silo, featuring a close-up of a woman’s face overlaid with a spiral staircase leading to the U.S. Capitol building.

We were about as critical as we could get of last week’s episode of Silo Season 3, but episode 5 was a direct answer to those concerns, delivering the best episode the series has given us in quite a long time. It illuminates a lot of what we’d been missing from the beginning of the season and brings back our focal-point characters from Seasons 1 and 2, headlined by Juliette gaining back her memory. We have more answers now than ever, as it’s revealed just how many silos exist and the control one silo holds over the rest, while we begin to learn the characters are running out of time before everything falls into chaos. Apple TV+’s sci-fi standout is back in a big way with episode 5, and the rest of the season seems to have a bright future ahead.

7. Lucky Ep. 4

84/100
– Apple TV+ - Next Ep. August 5 – 6:00 PM*
A close-up portrait of Anya Taylor-Joy with a red color tint, overlaid on a desert landscape with a burning vehicle for the October 2026 series Lucky.

After the last episode of Lucky, we were left under the impression that we were going to get a lethal confrontation between Lucky and her husband, who left her behind at the heist. Instead, we get a fantastic car chase episode that ends with Drew Starkey’s character, Cary, meeting his death, a twist that changes the entire trajectory of this story and the future of the show. We were under the impression this was going to be a simple chase with Lucky, the police, and the people after the money, but instead it delivered so much more entertainment than that. We get the best episode of the show so far in episode 4, placing Lucky as high as it has ever been on our weekly rankings.

8. My Adventures With Superman S3 Ep. 8

84/100
– HBO Max– Next Ep. August 8 – 12:00 AM*
Promotional poster for My Adventures with Superman Season 3 featuring a shadowed Superman with a glowing red eye and mechanical mask, premiering June 13th for viewers looking for October 2026 movies and TV on Adult Swim and Max.

After the lowest-rated episode of the season, My Adventures with Superman Season 3 returns to its time-altering plot, this time following a much more stubborn Superboy as he and his sister visit present-day Metropolis to stop Lex Luthor, a mission that feels like just another cycle in an endless string of bad futures. While that concept can get a little overused, Supergirl is amazing in this episode, perhaps even better than she is in the new Supergirl movie entirely, which is crazy to say but true. Nonetheless, episode 8 is not the best episode of the season, but it’s certainly a step back up to par for a show that is currently having its best season yet.

9. Trying Season 5 Ep. 4

83/100
– Apple TV+ – Next Ep. August 5 – 6:00 PM*
Poster for the October 2026 TV series Trying, featuring a man and woman embracing in the center with two younger people in the foreground.

Trying Season 5 took a step up in quality with episode 3, and episode 4 continues that trend as family and friends show up at Scott and Karen’s house when a hurricane hits the exact stretch of ocean where Scott is supposedly rowing, unbeknownst to them, he’s faking the entire trip and hiding in the bathroom. It’s a really fun, light-hearted, and funny episode that has some tension behind it and ends on a really well-executed note, making it yet another season best for the early rollout of Season 5. There are certainly concerns about the future of the season, but so far, so good for one of the shows with the most heart airing today, constantly surprising us with its clever and meaningful dialogue.

10. The Ghost in the Shell Ep. 4

83/100
– Prime Video – Next Ep. August 4 – 7:00 AM*
Anime poster for October 2026 movies and TV featuring Ghost in the Shell, showing seven tactical soldiers in tan uniforms holding various firearms, with the title in Japanese and English at the bottom.

Ghost in the Shell continues its streak of solid sci-fi anime to lead the way for the slowest anime season in quite a while, and after three episodes it’s clear that this souped-up, solid animation and more traditional telling of the story, with such a classic anime feel, is something worth releasing for Prime Video. After the announcements over the past week, it’s clear Prime Video is on a streak of legacy sequels and remakes in the next few weeks, and Ghost in the Shell was only the beginning. Whether this is all a good idea for the service is yet to be determined, but they’re off to a solid start with this anime.

11. Furious Ep. 1 - 3

82.0/100
– Hulu – Next Ep. August 2 9:00 PM
Movie poster for Furious featuring a large, glowing face looking down at the silhouette of a woman standing in front of a red backdrop, as seen in TV Weekly: July 27–August 2.

We missed Furious in our coverage of new releases and just barely caught the first three episodes before this week’s TV cycle wrapped, but we’re so glad we did, as these first three episodes are as unique and enticing as it gets for Hulu lately. We finally get a female serial killer spotlight and an incredibly well-acted lead FBI agent role, played by Emmy Rossum, who has enough baggage to carry the entire story herself as she tries to track the killer down. We’re not fully in on this yet, but a promising three-episode premiere sets Furious up to be one of the better new releases of the year so far, and we hope you join us over the next few weeks in deciding if it follows through on that outlook.

12. Black Torch Ep. 5

80/100
– Crunchyroll – Next Ep. August 9 – 7:15 AM*
Promotional poster for the October 2026 anime adaptation of Black Torch, featuring the main character pointing upward next to a black cat against a red background.

Black Torch continues to be a bit of a disappointing debut anime for a season we expected it to top the rankings of, but episode 5 proves to be the best episode yet, despite having a ton of flaws as well. We get a new character introduction as the mononoke plot continues to get pushed forward, and the fight scene is the best of the anime so far, which is why it earns a higher rating. But the dialogue feels a bit childish, and the overall storyline lacks a clear vision, which really hurts even the best episodes of Black Torch. We will continue to check out these weekly episodes, but it may be time to consider placing this one to the side for other new releases.

13. Big Brother Season 28 Ep. 11 - 14

79/100
– CBS/Paramount+ – Next Ep. August 5 – 8:00 PM*
Julie Chen Moonves sits at a desk in front of a wall of keys above the Big Brother logo, representing television highlights for October 2026.

Big Brother Season 28 feels much stronger than expected, and this week has continued that sentiment for me, but the reason it’s a point lower than it was last week is because of the theatrics by Jason that I simply was not a big fan of. I think the teapot banging was less gameplay and more just annoyance, and inversely, Kamu was a bit of a bully here, which made both sides of the coin this week weaker than the previous week. Nonetheless, Big Brother continues to prove to be much more entertaining and fun than expected, and while it sits low on this list in a packed week of good releases, this is the best reality series currently airing and one that we at TwilightRoom would recommend.

14. The Elusive Samurai Season 2 Ep. 3

79/100
– Crunchyroll– Next Ep. August 6 – 7:30 AM*
Promotional poster for The Elusive Samurai season 2, showing historical figures in a traditional wooden interior with text announcing a July 2026 release.

Still recovering from the season 2 drop of The Elusive Samurai, which caught me off guard, episode 3 continues the trend of a somewhat mediocre start to the season, one that doesn’t feel very moving or fresh enough to sustain the intrigue that the abandonment and revenge story of season one had. The same child training, fighting, and leadership charm are still very much present, leaving a lot of room for season 2 to settle back into a better rating. For now, though, The Elusive Samurai sits quite low on our list this week.

15. Cape Fear Ep. 10

79/100
– Apple TV+ - Series Complete
Movie poster for the October 2026 release of Cape Fear, featuring a large, red silhouette of a face with a small, detailed portrait of a man visible within the eye.

It’s been a couple of weeks since we last covered Cape Fear, and although episode 9 was its best episode so far in my view, the finale is a step back down as we jump off the deep end in every way possible, with Javier Bardem turning into something not even the effects added to this final house chase could save. The ending doesn’t quite satisfy the camp craze that worked so well in the last episode, and the final explanation isn’t the reveal everyone wanted, one that could have really rounded out the season. I do believe this show is a bit misunderstood by audiences who don’t quite understand its real goal and the tone it’s trying to achieve.

16. Sugar Season 2 Ep. 7

79/100
– Apple TV+ – Next Ep. August 7 – 10 PM*
A man in a suit and sunglasses stands in profile with the neon red word Sugar overlaid in front of him, reminiscent of October 2026 movies and TV.

Now, don’t be too fooled by Sugar sitting at last place on this list, episode 7 is another pretty solid entry compared to the downstep in quality season 2 has been for me, and if anything, this placement speaks more to the strength of this week in television than anything else. Sugar is settling into a good balance for its sci-fi, noir, and crime genre, but I’m not quite sure the three work well enough together here to deliver a good overall product, which is why the show has dropped in quality for me after its season one big reveal. Even though this episode wasn’t quite as rough as its first five, perhaps the wheels have spun out on Sugar.
